Q&A with Bust-R
Firstly, tell us how you got into making music / DJ'ing and how long have you been doing it for?
So, I would say what really got me into music/DJ'ing was seeing artists performing at major festivals. I was the guy that would listen to every transition and work out how they were doing it. Then with a lot of the popular tracks that were being played, I would listen to each element in the song and figure out why they used it. Bit weird but yeah, been DJ'ing unofficially for about 8 years and full time for 5, music production would be about 6 years :)
Are there any artists in particular that started your love of music? Tell us why you love them!
A little bit cliche but Avicii had a big influence on me getting into music production. A few other artists that helped fuel the fire were Sam Feldt, Bakermat, early Alesso, Joe Stone, Jonas Blue & early Lucas & Steve. I've always been into melodic, happy styles of music and I think that's why these names come to mind. They provide a good mix of danceable music but you can still listen to their music anywhere.
Do you remember your first gig? Tell us about it and now you've got a bit of experience under your belt what have you learned from it?
My first official gig was a 4 hour main to close set in front of about 300 people (capacity) at Cheeky Monkeys in Byron Bay, talk about pressure haha. All I could say was wow, nervous but it ended up being a great night and it has turned into being my longest-standing residency (5 years to date). I would say now vs back then, I'm far more comfortable reading the crowd and having the confidence to take the lead as the DJ should.
What’s fresh from the studio? New releases or working on anything in particular?
Actually yes! Sharif D & I just released a free remix we did of Justin Bieber's track 'Holy'. We're pretty happy with how it turned out, but yeah, there are a few other projects getting scheduled at the moment. Hopefully, I'll have something sooner, rather than later for you ;)
Have you got any events coming up you're excited about? Playing or attending.
Yep, I would say the most exciting event I have lined up at the moment would be the Nocturnals Agency Showcase on February 21st @ Prohibition. Rumour has it the Nocturnals Events are LIT! So make sure if you're reading this to come out and support a great team!
Any artists or labels you are obsessed with at the moment? Anyone we should keep eye on?
There are so many to choose from haha! Artists that come to mind are Dombresky, Chapter & Verse, ManyFew, DONT BLINK, Mick Mazoo & Redondo. I've been playing a lot of their tunes lately in my club sets.
What are your favorite 5 tunes right now?
1. Dombresky - Down Low
2. Mick Mazoo - Ain't Even Trying
3. Redondo, Ruben Golde - OOALH
4. Bleu Clair & OOTORO - Beat Like This
5. ManyFew - Get Close
What do you get up to when you're not working on music or playing?
Umm usually music, music and more music haha! Nah I play a fair bit of sport, 2 nights a week of indoor soccer and 1 afternoon of cricket every week. I play games sometimes as well like Halo, Fortnite or Among us with friends but yeah, that's about it really.
Any plans for the rest of 2021?
Get as many official releases out hahaha. Actually, my partner & I have got an apartment which is almost finished being built so that will be something different. I think my main plan is to just keep learning no matter what happens.
What’s something you’re secretly good at?
Games :P, maybe not as good nowadays but back some years ago I was in the 2nd best Halo 3 team in Australia. We came 2nd at the World Cyber Games finals in Sydney. I don't really talk about that much, soooo there you have it haha.
If you could collaborate with any two artists alive today, who would they be?
It'd have to be Sam Feldt or Jonas Blue. From a musical perspective, I think I would learn so much from these guys and they would be able to help hone my songwriting skills accordingly. Especially since our music tastes/styles are somewhat similar
Quick 5!
